PC game digital store, GOG.com (Good Old Games), has shut down saying that the site couldn’t remain in its current form.
"We have recently had to give serious thought to whether we could really keep GOG.com the way it is," the GOG.com team wrote on the firm’s home page. "… we’ve decided that GOG.com simply cannot remain in its current form," they said.
The two year old service sold older PC games for download and was notable for eschewing DRM mechanisms while also packaging old games in a format that would be compatible with newer versions of Windows.
"This doesn’t mean the idea behind GOG.com is gone forever. We’re closing down the service and putting this era behind us as new challenges await."
The company also said that it would create a system to allow previous customers to continue to download their games. GOG PR representative Tom Ohle had clarified the cryptic message somewhat by saying that "this doesn’t mean GOG is gone" and that there would be more news in "the coming days."
