Panasonic Toughbook marks 30 years of rugged innovation for frontline teams

Panasonic Toughbook is marking three decades of rugged mobile computing, celebrating the brand’s role in supporting frontline workers across emergency services, utilities, defence and transport. The milestone highlights how Toughbook has evolved from its first fully rugged CF‑25 notebook in 1996 to today’s AI‑enabled edge devices designed for mission‑critical field operations.

Developed to solve high failure rates experienced by utility workers using standard hardware, the original CF‑25 set the foundation for a new category of purpose‑built rugged computing. Panasonic’s customer‑focused engineering approach has remained central throughout the past 30 years, enabling advances in wireless connectivity, hybrid notebook‑tablet designs, secure mobile platforms and subscription‑based Mobile‑IT services.

Masaki Takeda, Director of Mobile Solutions Business Division Europe, said the brand’s longevity reflects its commitment to solving real‑world challenges as organisations face increasing pressure around cybersecurity, AI adoption and operational resilience.

Key milestones include the opening of the European Configuration Centre in Cardiff in 1998, the launch of the CF‑18 hybrid notebook in 2003, the introduction of the G1 tablet in 2012, and the arrival of the AI‑enabled Toughbook 40mk2 in 2024. Panasonic also expanded its European support footprint in 2025 with new Service and Solutions Centres in Cardiff and Budapest.
