Chip maker AMD has partnered with OCZ Storage Solutions – A Toshiba Group Company – to produce AMD Radeon-branded Solid State Drives (SSDs).
US consumers can now purchase the AMD Radeon R7 Series SSDs in 120GB, 240GB or 480GB capacities from online retailers. These will be available in the UK at the end of August from etailers including Overclockers UK.
The 120GB SSD will cost £74.99, the 240GB unit will be priced at £124.99, while the 480GB drive will set consumers back £224.99.
UK retailers can order the new SSDs from distributor Ingram Micro UK.
The news confirms rumours that AMD would enter the SSD market.
"The AMD Radeon brand is synonymous with performance and quality amongst PC gamers," said Roman Kyrychynskyi, director of memory at AMD.
"With these new products, we bring that reputation to the SSD market with a series of drives that offer an ideal combination of performance, reliability and affordability – great for gamers building or upgrading a rig."
The SSDs utilise the Toshiba Group’s latest A19 MLC NAND flash process and the Barefoot 3 M00 controller, with write endurance of 30GB/day, as well as read/write speeds of up to 550MB/s and 530MB/s respectively. This combination of hardware also features a special anodised black housing, characteristic of the AMD Radeon brand.
AMD Radeon R7 Series SSDs represent the next stage of AMD’s strategy to be a ‘one-stop shop’ for consumers, with a portfolio of high-performance solutions that now includes AMD Radeon graphics cards, AMD FX processors, AMD Accelerated Processing Units, AMD Radeon memory and processor chipsets.
