The HP 255 G1 will cost £219.99 and will be available at the end of April

UK’s first Ubuntu laptop goes on sale at Ebuyer

Online electronics retailer Ebuyer has become the first UK company to sell a laptop pre-installed with the Ubuntu OS – the HP 255 G1.

The HP notebook – priced at £219.99 and available at the end of April – will be the first computer of its kind to come pre-installed with the free operating system from Linux.

The HP 255 also comes with Windows 8 built-in for those who want the laptop with a more familiar operating system. It is powered by an AMD Dual Core E1, has 4GB of RAM and a 750GB HDD, plus a 15.6-inch screen as well as a webcam and Bluetooth.

Ubuntu computers have been difficult to acquire in Europe, with Ubuntu’s current market focus around South America and China.

Lee Weymouth, Head of Consumer Electronics at Ebuyer, said: "We’re selling the “No OS” notebook to give customers a wider choice with what operating system they want to install. Windows or MAC OS may be the most popular on the market but there are still options out there and this Ubuntu OS is a great alternative to the big boys.

"We know the wider market will look no further than Windows 8 when buying a new laptop but there is still a huge part of the tech community that want an open-source OS."

Ebuyer is taking pre-orders for the HP 255 G1.
