Palm's intellectual property was 'fundamental' to buyout, says HP exec

HP to launch webOS smartphones early next year

Hewlett-Packard will launch a number of smartphones in the first few months of 2011, using the mobile operating system it gained through its acquisition of Palm earlier this year.

According to Reuters, HP senior vice president Eric Cador told a conference: "You will see us coming early next year with new phones."

The hardware giant bought smartphone vendor Palm for $1.2 billion in April, acquiring its webOS software in the process.

Cador said Palm’s intellectual property was "extremely fundamental" in the acquisition, which was completed in July.

No further details of the forthcoming handsets were announced.
