Women between 18 and 34 are the largest group of internet users in the Britain

Women highest net users in UK

According to a study from research firm Nielsen/NetRatings, young women are now the most populous demographic that use the internet in the UK, reported the BBC.

The research claims that women between 18 and 34 make up 18 per cent of all internet users in Britain. Compared to their male counterparts, they also account for 27 per cent more of the total UK online time.

The statistics go against the traditional image of the average internet user – that of a young, ‘geeky’ male.

"This represents a seismic shift from the early days when the internet was the domain of the techno-geek," said Alex Burmaster, an analyst at Nielsen/NetRatings. "If you asked the question ‘who spends the most time on the computer’ – most people would still answer men," he added.

The majority of the sites visited by women in the 18 to 34 group are high street store sites such as Miss Selfridge and H&M, pregnancy and child orientated sites, and social networking sites such as Facebook.
