Female IT experts to front record-breaking Google App-a-thon

A group of all-female IT experts are set to take over the Google Campus in London’s Tech City on Saturday 13th June.

The team, which consists of engineers, scientists and other IT experts, will be teaching school children how to build smartphone apps and are hoping to break the Guinness World Record for people learning to code mobile apps at the same time.

Headed up by lecturer Dr Lela Koulouri from Brunel University and UCL academic Dr Sue Black, Google’s App-a-thon will involve thousands of children from across the UK who will use a drag and drop building tool.

“While we aim to break the Guinness World Record for people learning to code mobile apps at the same time, the main objective is to change perceptions,” said Koulouri.

"By having people learn from female trainers, we’ll demonstrate to young girls and boys that IT careers can be fun and that female scientists are not geeks or freaks but absolutely normal women.”
