Samsung unveils 2TB Ecogreen hard drive

Samsung has launched the F4EG, which the Korean manufacturer claims is the world’s highest-density, environmentally friendly hard disk drive for the desktop market.

The EcoGreen F4EG features a 2 terabyte capacity made up of 667GB across each of its three platters. The company said that the F4EG brings better performance,lower power and improved reliability to its ‘EcoGreen’ range of hard drives.

“Storage-hungry multimedia professionals, gamers and home PC users continue to increase the amount of video, music, photo and other personal data they store and back-up,” said I.C. Park, Samsung vice president of storage sales. “The F4EG delivers all the benefits of a low-power drive yet features top performance quality and is environmentally friendly.”

Samsung said that the drive provides 23 percent lower power consumption in standby mode than the previous platter model, the F3EG. The F4EG incorporates a 3.0Gbps SATA interface, Native Command Queuing and a 32MB buffer memory.

The F4EG drive has suggested price of $119.99 (£75) and is due to begin shipping in early September.
