Blu-ray sales are expected to top the 100m mark for the first time in 2009, according to market research firm Futuresource.
The bulk of those sales are expected to take place in the US, where the format is predicted to boom from 24m in 2008 to in excess of 80m this year.
Europe is expected to make up the rest of those sales, but is considered to still be in the early adoption stage. However, the UK was highlighted as being far ahead of the rest of the Europe in leading adoption of the technology.
"Sales of more than 3.5 million units in 2008 [the UK], represented over 40 per cent of the West European total," commented Futuresource senior analyst Mai Hoang.
The firm also said that it expects Blu-ray to account for 35 per cent of all Western European video disc sales by 2012, with it accounting for over half in the US.
