'Cloud Computing' deemed a generic term, one that does not conjure up image of Dell

Dell loses trademark case

Dell has lost in its attempt to trademark the term ‘Cloud Computing’ after the United States Patent and Trademark Office rejected the term on the basis of it now being a ‘generic’ term.

The vendor originally applied to trademark the term back in March 2007, as reported by PC Retail earlier this month.

According to the USPTO, the term was classified as generic because cloud computing is: "incapable of functioning as a source-identifier for applicant’s services".
