Early prototype may have been replaced by model from LG

Images leak of purported Google Motorola smartwatch

Images claimed to show a prototype of the long-rumoured Google smartwatch have been leaked.

Following rumours that a Google Nexus smartwatch manufactured by LG would be revealed in June, Android Police posted a series of photos showing a Motorola-branded device.

The prototype wearable was said by an anonymous source to have developed with the codename ‘Gem’, with ‘Google Watch’ allegedly set as its release title.

The pictures show a rubberised strap, a square display and several physical buttons including a rocker switch. At the end of the strap, a USB connector is shown to flip out for charging the device.

In additional images, the screen displays a settings menu with the ability to set ‘developer mode’, ‘3 Bit mode apps’ and date and time preferences.

Observers suggest that the Motorola prototype may have been abandoned in favour of the rumoured Google LG device, but Motorola has since confirmed in a tweet (see below) that they are working on a smartwatch device for release later in 2014.
