Flash storage specialist SanDisk has introduced the first SSD upgrade service with live video support – but it’s not coming to the UK.
The SanDisk SSD Concierge Service offers support for all SanDisk consumer solid state drive (SSD) installations and is designed to help "consumers of all technical backgrounds" install their new drive.
The customer must pay $39.99 to access the service through Amazon and TigerDirect.
PCR can confirm the service has only been confirmed in the US, however, and SanDisk has no current plans to launch it in the UK.
While SanDisk says it’s an industry first, the live video support is not a surprise. Amazon launched its Mayday service a couple of years ago, giving customers access to live video support from their Fire tablet at the touch of a button.
$40 isn’t cheap, but neither are 24-hour technical support phone lines. We wouldn’t be surprised if this type of 24-hour live video support becomes commonplace with other PC/tech vendors in the near future.
"Through the SanDisk SSD Concierge Service, consumers will have all of the tools required to upgrade their laptop successfully," SanDisk said in a statement.
"This includes the hardware and software necessary to migrate data as well as install the new SSD. Once data has been successfully migrated, consumers will have the ability to schedule a video conference via mobile device with a SanDisk technician, who will walk them through the final steps of removing the existing storage device and installing their new SSD."
"Many customers understand the benefits an SSD can bring to an aging laptop but they also feel anxious about performing an upgrade by themselves," added Philippe Willams, director of product marketing at SanDisk.
"The SanDisk SSD Concierge Service’s step-by-step live support will give consumers the confidence to install an SSD and enjoy the benefits of speed, performance and reliability."
