‘It’s not kill or be killed, it’s invite or be invited,’ explains Ever, Jane developer

Jane Austen-themed MMO to offer ‘dinner parties, not dungeons’

It is a truth universally acknowledged that an independent video game in possession of a desire for development must be in want of a Kickstarter campaign.

The latest game to achieve crowdfunding success is the Jane Austen-themed MMO, Ever, Jane, which has exceeded its $100,000 target by $10,000.

The online game is a unique take on massively multiplayer online roleplaying games such as World of Warcraft, offering players the chance to occupy the virtual world of Jane Austen, where, the developers say; “it’s is not about kill or be killed, but invite and be invited”.

“We want to bring the fun of virtual worlds to a non-gaming audience,” explained Judy Tyrer of developer Three Turn Productions, who has previously worked at Ubisoft, Sony Online Entertainment and on popular MMO Second Life.

“Instead of destroying dragons, we use gossip to destroy our enemies,” Tyrer added. “Instead of raids, we have exuberant balls.”

Players will use slander and lies to undermine their rivals’ social standing, and will be notified if they are being talked about too often – which could mean the damage they’re attempting to inflict on their opposition could return to meet them two-fold.

The game also retains some elements of traditional MMO games, with Personality Traits operating in a similar manner to levelling and stat improvements.

A prototype of Ever, Jane can be downloaded from the game’s Kickstarter page, with the game set for release sometime in the future.
