Valve has started sending out the first wave of invites for the beta Linux version of Steam.
Currently only working on Ubuntu 12.04, Valve received over 60,000 beta applications for the Linux version of Steam last week. The company has stated that other popular Linux distributions will be supported in the future.
The service currently supports 24 Linux games, including the free-to-play title Team Fortress 2 as well as Serious Sam 3. Valve’s in-house developed titles Portal and Left 4 Dead 2 are expected to become available on Linux soon.
"This is a huge milestone in the development of PC gaming," said Gabe Newell, Valve president and co-founder. "Steam users have been asking us to support gaming on Linux. We’re happy to bring rich forms of entertainment and our community of users to this open, customer-friendly platform."
Launched in September, Steam for Linux also supports Big Picture mode. Intended for living room TVs, the interface is designed for use with handheld controllers.
