Dubbed the ‘computer for everyone’, the new Chromebook is the latest attempt by Google to make Chrome OS a hit.
The new Chromebook, not to be confused with the Samsung Chromebook 550, will cost just $249 (£155).
“The new Chromebook is a great computer at any price, but it’s an incredible computer at $249. It’s one of the lightest laptops on the market,” said Google’s senior vice president of Chrome and Apps, Sundar Pichai.
“You can easily carry it around all day – it’s 2.5 pounds, a mere 0.8 inches thick, with more than 6 hours of battery life for the typical user. And with 100 GB of free storage on Google Drive, you can get to all of your stuff anytime, anywhere.”
While the cost is low for an 11.6-inch ultrabook-like, slim laptop with 1366 x 769 resolution – keep in mind that this is not a normal laptop. Chrome OS is Google’s own internet-based operating system, the whole OS is a cloud-based platform. If you get suck without an active internet connection there’s not much you can do with it.
Google’s Samsung Chromebook will be available next week across 30 PC World and Currys stores in the UK, on the Google Play store, and from 500 Best Buy stores across the US. Those wanting to pre-order one can do so right now from Amazon, Best Buy and PC World, as well as other online retailers.
