Apple has quietly taken down a claim on its website saying that Mac’s are immune from PC viruses.
The ‘Why you’ll love a Mac’ section of Apple’s site no longer displays the tagline ‘It doesn’t get PC viruses’. Instead, it now says ‘It’s built to be safe’.
The supporting text has also been given a makeover, the line ‘A Mac isn’t susceptible to the thousands of viruses plaguing Windows-based computers’ has been changed to ‘Built-in defences in OS X keep you safe from unknowingly downloading malicious software on your Mac’.
Apple’s latest OS, Mountain Lion, will be released in July and will include Gatekeeper, a feature which restricts applications users can install on their devices.
This all comes after the Flashback Trojan scare, which infected more than 550,000 Macs back in April. Just over half of the infected computers were located in the US, only 12 per cent were in the UK.
Apple has always made a point of stating that its OS is much less susceptible to viruses that often hit Windows-based PCs. But with the appearance of Flashback, Apple lawyer must have been getting a little worried about the immunity claims.
