Sony has unveiled a pair of new Xperia Android smartphones at the Mobile World Conference tradeshow in Barcelona, set to arrive in the second quarter.
The new Xperia U and Xperia P are the first to arrive since Sony completed the firm’s buyout of Sony Ericsson, now dropping the Swedish Ericsson from the brand from now on. Sadly that seems to be the most interesting thing about the new Xperia handsets which have little to write home about in specifications.
The Xperia P features a 4.3-inch 960 x 540 pixel screen and dual core 1GHz processor and will ship with the aging Android 2.3 Gingerbread with a promised 4.0 upgrade when the firm gets to it. Physically, however, both the Xperia P and U shine with a one-piece aluminium unibody chassis.
The Xperia U a 3.5-inch 480 x 854 ‘Reality’ display and translucent ‘chin’ which changes colour although we’re not sure why. Perhaps it’s a bit like the notification LED that seemed to fall out of favor following Nexus One’s famous trackball.
The Xperia P is compatible with a new dock which will be handy to get quick access to the 1080p video shot from the beefy 8 megapixel camera.
