The chief executive of Google, Eric Schmidt has withdrawn from his position on Apple’s board of directors.
The move comes shortly after the US Federal Communications Commission announced that it would be launching an investigation in to Apple’s decision to block Google’s Voice App for the iPhone, and as the Federal Trade Commission investigates complications caused by overlapping board members.
Schmidt has served on the Apple board since May 2006, but has allegedly excluded himself from issues where the two companies infringe upon each others business, such as mobile software and internet browsers.
“Unfortunately, as Google enters more of Apple’s core businesses, with Android and now Chrome OS, Eric’s effectiveness as an Apple Board member will be significantly diminished since he will have to recuse himself from even larger portions of our meetings due to potential conflicts of interest,” Apple CEO Steve Jobs told the Washington Post.
“Therefore, we have mutually decided that now is the right time for Eric to resign his position on Apple’s Board.”
