Gates gives next Microsoft operating system, codenamed Windows 7, a rough release date

New Windows OS to arrive next year

Microsoft co-founder and chairman Bill Gates has said the next version of the firm’s operating system, codenamed Windows 7, will arrive “sometime in the next year or so.”

"I’m super enthused about what it will do in lots of ways," he said in a seminar on corporate philanthropy held during an annual meeting of the Inter-American Development Bank, reported Reuters. "That’ll be sometime in the next year or so that we’ll have a new version."

Gates added that the operating system will revolutionise the mobile sector and transform the desk of the future with touch screen features allowing users to manipulate the computer desktop with their hands.

It was expected that the OS would appear in early 2010, in line with Microsoft’s statement that it would release a new version of Windows roughly three years after Vista hit shelves in January 2007. However Gates’ statements imply it will arrive somewhat sooner.
