Sources blame furnace maintenance for expected shortages

LCD glass substrates to run short in 2008

Industry sources have told the Chinese-language Commercial Times, that there is an expected shortage of glass substrates in 2008. Major supplier, Corning, is planning to have many of its furnaces undergo annual maintenance later this year, which will cause shortages for panel makers.

Digitimes reports that Taiwan-based first-tier panel makers have foreseen these shortages, particularly with the 7.5-generation substrates, and have shifted some of their small glass substrate procurement to Japan-based companies, in spite of higher prices.
