Intel has announced its intention to release two new value chipsets next quarter. The G31 and P31 Express chipsets replace Intel’s now aging 946GZ, 946PL and 945G Express hardware.
The new motherboards however are not derivatives of Intel’s new Bearlake technology despite the G31 and P31 Express slot below the G33 Express. Instead, the chipsets are actually from Intel’s 945-generation hardware, albeit with added support for the manufacturer’s Yorkfield and Wolfdale processors.
Both the G31 and P31 Express chipsets offer support for Intel processors with a 1066MHz front-side bus. However, support for the newer 1333MHz front-side bus processors will not arrive until after quarter one 2008, due to it awaiting Intel’s validation.
The chipsets also support DDR2-800 memory and additional are paired with Intel’s ICH7, ICH7R and ICH7DH south bridges.
