Dell has announced project Multipack, a new shipping policy that will see the vendor pack large numbers of servers in fewer boxes in order to help it save on costs and cardboard consumption, reported The Register.
A single box can now contain up to four 1U systems or 10 blades, and each Multipack box also contains a corrugated pallet which removes the need for an additional wooden one. To further save on costs from now on Dell will only send out one set of product manuals and CDs per box.
According to estimations from the computer giant, the policy will save it 2,000 tons of cardboard per year. It will also cut back on 1,000 tons of wood pallets, 300 tons of paper, 80 tons of polyethylene and 40 tons of plastic.
So far, project Multipack only applies to the PowerEdge 1950, PowerEdge 860, PowerEdge SC1435 and PowerEdge 1955 servers.
