Retail giant Amazon is reportedly eyeing up London’s West End as the location of its first Go store in the UK.
Amazon opened its first Go store in Seattle in January. Since then, an additional two stores have opened up in Seattle, three have popped up in Chicago and one has opened in San Francisco.
According to the Sunday Telegraph, a site near Oxford Circus could be the first in the UK to house the cashier-free store, with Amazon is looking for a space between 3,000 and 5,000 square feet in size.
Promising a stress-free shopping experience, Amazon Go stores have “no lines and no checkout”, instead customers use the Amazon Go app on their phone. The ceiling of the store has multiple cameras and store shelves have weight sensors, so when a customer takes an item off the shelf, it will be added to the person’s virtual cart. If a customer places an item back on the shelf, it is "taken out" of the virtual cart.
The card attached to their account is automatically billed when they leave the store, and the Amazon Go app also allows customers to add spouses and even their children to their account so anything taken from the store can be charged to the right account.
Amazon is reportedly planning to open as many as 3,000 Amazon Go stores by 2021.
