Apple has announced that it is now completely run on renewable energy.
The company has stated that all parts of its operations are now powered by green energy. That includes its shops, offices and data centres which are spread across 43 different countries. Apple says that since 2014, it has reduced greenhouse gas emissions by 54 per cent from its facilities as well as preventing nearly 2.1 million metric tons of CO2e from entering the atmosphere. According to Apple, it currently has 25 operational renewable energy projects around the world, totalling 626 megawatts of generation capacity.
And the tech giant isn’t satisfied with its achievements just yet. Apple is in fact urging all of its suppliers to turn green with 23 currently following Apple’s lead. “We’re committed to leaving the world better than we found it. After years of hard work we’re proud to have reached this significant milestone,” said Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO. “We’re going to keep pushing the boundaries of what is possible with the materials in our products, the way we recycle them, our facilities and our work with suppliers to establish new creative and forward looking sources of renewable energy because we know the future depends on it.”
The move to renewables has been an aim for Apple for a number of years. It has included the construction of its new Apple Park campus which is laden in solar panels all the way around its roof. The company’s data centre arm was the first to achieve 100 per cent green status, with all sites running off renewables since 2014.
