Who is SanDisk’s 400GB miscroSD for?

SanDisk has announced the world’s largest miscroSD card at IFA. Costing a whopping $249.99, the first-ever 400GB microSD starts shipping in September. Capable of storing 35 hours of full HD video, SanDisk is primarily marketing its new microSD card towards action camera and gaming console owners. It will likely be snapped up by drone users, GoPro film-makers and Nintendo Switch enthusiasts looking to bolster their storage.

Some industry experts are also suggesting that the card will be deployed in Android-powered smartphones, as consumers use their devices more and more. "Mobile devices have become the epicenter of our lives, and consumers are now accustomed to using their smartphones for anything from entertainment to business. We are collecting and sharing massive amounts of data on smartphones, drones, tablets, PCs, laptops and more. We anticipate that storage needs will only continue to grow as people continue to expect more sophisticated features on their devices and desire higher quality content," Jeff Janukowicz, research vice president, IDC. "We estimate mobile device users worldwide will install over 150 billion applications alone this year, which require a ton of memory on all of our favorite devices."

To put the latest card into persepective, the 400GB card offers 144GB more storage than any other microSD card on the market. The new card also supports 100MB read speed, A1 app performance, and UHS Speed Class 1 for the best performance available. This microSD also has up to 100MB/s transfer speeds which will allow users to transfer 1,200 photos in a single minute.

SanDisk vice president of Product Marketing Sven Rathjen said that he is proud how far the company has come since the invention of the 128MB TransFlash in 2004. “We continue to push technology boundaries and transform the way consumers use their mobile devices,” said Rathjen said. “By focusing on achieving new technology milestones, we enable consumers to keep up with their mobile-centric lifestyles with storage solutions they trust.”
