One of the most hotly anticipated tech products of 2016, NVIDIA’s GeForce GTX 1080 GPU, as sold out of pre-orders on some of biggest tech etail sites within minutes.
The GPU is scheduled to officially launch on May 27th. But ahead of that date, the likes of Amazon, Newegg and Best Buy opened up their pre-orders for customers.
On a number of websites, the ZOTAC and EVGA versions went up for pre-order and were sold out within minutes. Looking at nowintstock.net, the GPU is currently out of stock at Amazon, Newegg, Best Buy, B&H Photo and the Nvidia Store.
The site breaks down the times between pre-orders going live, and products becoming out of stock.
It shows that on Amazon, EVGA’s first GTX 1080 model sold out in six minutes, whereas ZOTAC’s version sold out in 12 minutes.
As well as EVGA and ZOTAC, the GPU will also be available from the likes of ASUS, MSI, PNY and more.
The GTX 1080 is the first gaming GPU designed for the 16nm FinFET process, which uses smaller, faster transistors that can be packed together more densely.
Pascal-based GPUs are the first to harness the power of 8GB of Micron’s GDDR5X memory. The 256-bit memory interface runs at 10Gb per second, helping to drive 1.7 times higher effective memory bandwidth than that delivered by regular GDDR5.
Increases in bandwidth and power efficiency allow the GTX 1080 to run at clock speeds of more than 1700 MHz, while consuming 180 watts of power. And new GPU Boost 3 technology supports advanced overclocking functionality.
Last month, PCR reported on the design of the GTX 1080, which was leaked ahead of its official unveiling via a user on Baidu. The images showed a silver and black casing equipped with a fan and featuring a plastic cover for the heatsink. It turns out the images were accurate.
