Amazon has revealed that its Alexa Voice Service (AVS) is now available for hardware developers.
Alexa is the cloud-based voice service that powers Amazon Echo, which developers will be able to integrate into their internet-connected devices.
The service is free to use, which will allow developers to create a Wi-Fi alarm clock that lets customers talk to Alexa for example, or a home sound system that lets users turn on music by saying ‘play my playlist’.
Greg Hart, VP for Amazon Echo and Alexa Voice Services, said: "Today, we’re excited to open up the Alexa Voice Service to any device maker that wants to add Alexa into their products for free.
"We’ve made adding Alexa incredibly easy for developers – any device with a speaker, an internet connection, and a microphone can integrate Alexa with just a few lines of code. From start-ups to established companies, we can’t wait to see how developers integrate Alexa."
Amazon Echo powers Alexa, which is a new category of device designed around a person’s voice.
Various hardware manufactures have also incorporated Alexa into their porducts, including smart home connector Wink, which will allow users to connect to smart devices within their homes.
The free AVS will be available as a developer preview starting next month, and developers can sign-up and receive notifications about the service here.
