A female group of IT experts hope to front a new world record at Google’s Campus in the UK this month.
During London’s Tech City on June 13th, the group will hold an App-a-thon that aims to teach school kids how to build smartphone apps in a Guinness World Record bid.
Headed up by lecturer Dr Lela Koulouri from Brunel University and UCL academic Dr Sue Black, the App-a-thon will involve thousands of children from across the UK who will use a drag and drop building tool.
Koulouri said: “While we aim to break the Guinness World Record for people learning to code mobile apps at the same time, the main objective is to change perceptions.
"By having people learn from female trainers, we’ll demonstrate to young girls and boys that IT careers can be fun and that female scientists are not geeks or freaks but absolutely normal women.”
This news comes as Apple boss Tim Cook calls for more diversity within the company’s workforce.
According to Mashable, Cook said: "If you believe as we believe that diversity leads to better products, and we’re all about making products that enrich peoples lives, then you obviously put a ton of energy behind diversity the same way you would put a ton of energy behind anything else that is truly important."
During Apple’s keynote speech at WWDC 2015, two women from the firm took to the stage including Jennifer Bailey, VP of worldwide online stores, and Susan Prescott, VP of product management and marketing.

PCR will also be holding its second Woman of the Year event this October, following the success of last year’s event which recognised Sarah Shields, Dell’s UK executive director and general manager, for her efforts in the channel. More details on this will be announced in due course.
