Volkswagen’s new Apple Watch app lets you unlock your car

Using physical keys to lock and unlock your car could become a thing of the past, thanks to Volkswagen’s new app for the Apple Watch.

The app allows users to unlock their car doors – and it’s an addition to the company’s Car-Net system, which already works through an iOS app on the iPhone.

Using the app, users will also be able to open and close windows, provide a map of the vehicle’s parked location, plus it can even set off an alarm when the driver has trouble finding their parked car.

Other functions include speed tracking and a set of boundary notifications, allowing parents to track their teen’s speed.

Abdallah Shanti, executive VP and group CIO for Volkswagen Region Americas, said: “These high-tech features, available through the Car-Net app for Apple Watch, are paving the way to Volkswagen’s future of connected vehicles.”

This news comes after users revealed that they were facing some technical issues with the Apple Watch following its recent launch.

Customers have complained that the watch’s Digital Crown gets stuck, while Apple also revealed that wrist tattoos can impact the heart rate sensor.
