Microsoft’s CEO has stated that every line of code in Windows needs to be refreshed every five years.
Speaking in an interview with Aspen Institute CEO Walter Isaacson, Satya Nadella stated that “Windows as we know of it has to change”.
Nadella explained that the Windows OS running on Xbox and Windows Phone is not the same as the one running on PCs, and while some brands are enduring, code needs to be refreshed, hinting that there may be some major changes to these platforms in the near future.
He also said the company has a lot of work to do in the ‘mobile-first world, noting that although Microsoft controls the platform for 90 per cent of PCs, it only has 14 per cent of total devices.
Nadella revealed that Microsoft has a goal of having applications like Office on the home screens of all devices, whether they run iOS, Android or Windows. This will be achieved using Microsoft’s cloud services.
With rumours suggesting that Windows 9 will launch this autumn, screenshots have already leaked allegedly showing the new design of the start menu.
This has come in the midst of Microsoft’s 2014 World Partner Conference, where the firm has already outlined a number of new cloud offerings to partners.
