4K Ultra HD TV sales also rose 200% month-on-month

Currys/PC World TV sales double ahead of World Cup

Sales of TVs in Currys & PC World have doubled year-on-year as consumers upgrade their sets in time for the World Cup in Brazil.

In the last week, Dixons Retail (Currys/PC World parent company) have seen sales of 50-inch and above TVs double compared to this time last year.

In particular, sales of 4K Ultra HD TVs this month are up nearly 200 per cent versus the same point last month.

Dixons Retail kicked off a big marketing campaign and ‘Cash for Goals’ promotion last month. As well as TV and radio ads running, the company is giving back registered customers £10 for every goal England scores during the football tournament or £5 for every Brazil goal.

Currys & PC World says that 64 per cent of Brits are putting their money on Brazil to be the big winners of the football competition, with only 36 per cent backing England.

It added that 15 per cent of Brits are looking to make a new technological purchase specially to watch the football. Over half of consumers polled say that their current device is too old and it will cost more to repair than to buy a new one.

John Mitchell, Category Manager for large-screen TVs at Currys & PC World, said: “With the football approaching, more and more people are keen to watch the tournament on the best products around. Clearly, a lot of research and discussion about the right tech has been going on in households up and down the country over the last few weeks.

"We’re here to help people find the right footy solution for them, and we’re already seeing increased demand for our range of 4K Ultra HD TVs – sales this month are up nearly 200 per cent versus the same point last month.”

The World Cup will get underway on June 12th.
