Staples has been experiencing steady growth for tablets over the past year

Staples: “We’re considering own-brand tablet”

The retailer has told PCR that it is considering following in the footsteps of Tesco and Argos and releasing a Staples own-brand tablet.

Staples category manager Nikhil Gohill said: "We are currently in the process of investigating the opportunity to align Staples with some great value tablet options.

“Creating our own brand tablet is something we are also considering as part of this investigation to offer our customers a great product at a very reasonable price.”

Gohill told PCR that Staples has been experiencing steady growth over the past year for the tablets it currently offers, with the retailer expecting sales to peak significantly in the lead up to Christmas.

If Staples does decide to release its own tablet, it will have to compete with Tesco’s Hudl, a device that costs £119 and comes with a 1.5GHz quad-core processor, 7-inch HD screen and Android 4.2.2.

It will also be up against the Argos MyTablet, another 7-inch tablet with Android 4.2.2 that beats Tesco on price, costing consumers only £100.
