Indie retailers are pleased with the news

OPINION: Every Little Helps – what Tesco stepping back from tech means

At first glance Tesco’s step back from consumer electronics represents massive opportunities for independent retailers.

The supermarket’s UK boss Philip Clarke explained that tech now takes up around two-thirds of the space it usually would in new stores, while older ones will have non-food stock reallocated later this year. Combine this with the fact that the supermarket no longer offers computer repairs, and you can understand why indies have told PCR they’re pleased with the news.

The independent PC retail sector needs all the help it can get and if that means taking a few customers from the UK’s biggest retail chain, so be it. Some believe this move from Tesco won’t make the slightest difference, but less shelf space will of course make the supermarket chain more selective. I commend it for focusing on what it does best: selling groceries. I order my weekly shop online and pop in for the odd extra every now and then. But I don’t go there to get my computer repaired. I expect them to know about Gillette, not GeForce.

Meanwhile, I should probably introduce myself. I’ve been a computer geek since the days of playing Doom on an Intel 486 and I genuinely think this is one of the most fascinating and fast-paced industries around. Whether you’re a vendor, indie, distie, reseller or anything in-between, I want to make sure you’re being heard. So pick up the phone and give me a shout.
