Google spots mistake in alleged Digital Millennium Copyright Act takedown request

Report: Microsoft asks Google to remove its own site from searches

Microsoft has mistakenly asked Google to remove certain links to its own website from searches, reports suggest.

Online content protection firm LeakID is said to have sent Google a takedown request on behalf of Microsoft, to stop tracking parts of Microsoft.com, reports Torrentfreak.

These kind of Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) requests are usually made to report infringing links, which Google inspects and potentially removes from its search engine, but it appears this Microsoft one was sent in error.

The links listed include older Microsoft product and support pages, including a page on Microsoft Office 2003.

However, it seems Google noticed Microsoft’s apparent mistake and has not removed the Microsoft.com pages from its search results.

Google has received takedown requests for over 100 million links this year alone.
