The Microsoft CEO discusses the firm’s flagship tablet’s moderate sales and hints the release of a high-end version.
Talking to French publication Le Parisien, Ballmer claims that sales of the new device have been restricted by the constraints of the sales channel with the limited availability of the Surface.
The Surface is currently only available to purchase online directly from the Windows Store.
However, the modest label offered by Ballmer seems a tad unfair considering sales of the Surface were strong enough to trigger a shortage of the entry-level $499 model, which remained sold out online for over a week.
Whilst the CEO failed to disclose any sales numbers regarding the device, Ballmer did highlight the imminent release of a high-end version of the Surface.
Packing a third-generation Intel i5 processor, 4GB RAM and a 128GB solid-state drive, the improved device packs a significant punch.
The top-level Surface will also ship equipped with a 1920×1080 10.6-inch display, as well as an upgraded operating system with Windows 8 Pro.
Pricing for the new device has yet to be formally announced by Microsoft, but it is widely expected to be revealed at the beginning of net year.
