Everything is much thinner now

New iPad Mini unveiled

Apple has revealed the mystery product that everyone knew was coming – the iPad Mini.

According to various reports, the launch event opened with Jonathan Ives talking about how the new device is not a small iPad but an iPad concentrated.

It’s an all new design, which might be somewhat galling for the Apple fans who just bought the fourth generation iPad, which was launched in March this year.

Priced at $329, the iPad Mini is just 7.2mm thick, which according to Tim Cook is thinner than a pencil. It has the same resolution as its larger brethren, 1024×768, but thanks to its smaller screen this will make images seem sharper.

In terms of spec, it’s similar to the iPad 2 as it runs the Apple A5 chipset and has Wireless N, Bluetooth 4.0 and optional 4G connectivity, although the Mini uses iOS 6.

Battery life is given as ten hours, the device carries two cameras – a 720 pixel forward facing camera and a 1080 pixel rear facing camera – and it even has Siri.
