Lowest reported quarterly income since March 2010

Microsoft profits down by 25%

Microsoft has revealed that its profits for the quarter were down but said that it was at the dawn of a new era in its history.

Quarterly profits fell from $7.2 billion to $5.3 billion, with overall revenues of around $16 billion.

These figures reflect a wider trend of poor results from various vendors in the channel, which were anticipated after it was revealed that the PC channel as a whole had declined in sales volume by eight per cent.

Despite this, the vendor is looking ahead to the launch of its new operating system, Windows 8, and its Surface tablets that are designed to showcase the capabilities of the new system, as well as the imminent launch of Windows Phone 8.

“The launch of Windows 8 is the beginning of a new era at Microsoft," said Microsoft’s CEO Steve Ballmer. " Investments we’ve made over a number of years are now coming together to create a future of exceptional devices and services, with tremendous opportunity for our customers, developers, and partners."
