Departure fuels rumours that Amazon is working on its own smartphone

Another Windows Phone exec jumps ship to Amazon

Rumours of a possible smartphone release from Amazon have heated up following the departure of another Windows Phone executive.

The buzz first began earlier this year when Brandon Watson jumped ship to the online retailer from Microsoft’s smartphone platform, sparking rumours than the company was working on it’s own smartphone device.

Watson left the company to become the director of Kindle cross platform at Amazon.

After falling relatively quiet, rumours have started flying again with another Windows exec making the switch.

Robert Williams, who was previously senior director of Windows Phone business development, recently updated his LinkedIn profile to state he is now "Director App Store" at Amazon.

Neither of these appointments specifically point to an impending Amazon Phone release, but they come at a time where the rumour mill is buzzing with reports that the company is currently testing out a number of smartphone prototypes, which it plans to sell at the end of the year.

Many expect the rumoured device to be similar to Amazon’s Kindle Fire, equipped with a smaller screen and powered by an Android operating system.
