Online encyclopedia Wikipedia has taken the Italian version of the site down in protest of new laws being introduced by the Berlusconi government.
The draft laws will impose restrictions on media outlets and web pages including forcing online reporting to correct defamatory information appearing within 48 hours and without the right of appeal.
The site specifically protested the definition of defamatory content was content deemed by the ‘applicant’ to be detrimental of their image without third party impartiality.
Wikipedia described the law as an "unacceptable restriction of their freedom and independence" and warned that the site could shut permanently in Italy should the proposed laws be enacted.
