Broadband fans scurry to web site to see if they're next

BT add 66 exchanges to fibre roll-out

BT Openreach announced that a further 66 exchanges that are next in line for super fast fibre-based broadband.

The expanded list of exchanges are dotted across the UK and between them, BT said, over a million new premises would gain access to the network. However most are not expected to come online until 2012.

BT’s wholesale broadband arm also said that a milestone of five million premesis covered by the fibre infrastructure would be passed later this month. BT also announced a trial of wireless equipment operating in the so-called ‘whitespaces’ spectrum freed up by the digital TV switchover.

"Being able to bring faster broadband speeds within reach of more than five million premises is a significant milestone and we are well on our way to passing 10 million in 2012 and two-thirds of UK premises by the end of 2015," said BT Openreach boss Liv Garfield.
