Includes unusual split-screen 5.5-inch device

Sony joins tablet fray with upcoming Android S1 and S2

Sony has unveiled a pair of upcoming Android 3.0-powered tablets including a 5.5-inch model with a folding split-screen displays.

The new tablets codenamed the S1 and S2 will both appear later in the year according to a press release appearing on the Sony Japan website.

Both devices will be armed with 3G and wi-fi connections but the S2, with a split 5.5-inch folding screen is the more unusual of the two devices, with two 1024×480 resolution displays.

The S2 can also use the bottom touch screen as a game controller, making the device look like a sort of supersized Android-powered Nintendo DS.

Even the standard-looking S1 has a wedge shaped design in order to improve the weight distribution and comfort, Sony said. Both tablets are based on Nvidia’s Tegra 2 chipset, so common in Android 3.0 tablets appearing on the horizon.
