Sony boss lets slip on delayed Exmor R sensor

Sony to provide 8MP camera for iPhone 5?

Sony’s CEO made comments during an interview with the Wall Street Journal which have fueled speculation that the electronics giant will be supplying an 8 megapixel Exmore R camera for the upcoming iPhone 5.

Speaking at a Journal hosted event called Sony Talks Tech, Sony boss Howard Stringer said that the firm’s best sensor technology was built in one of the Japanese tsunami affected factories and that they were destined for Apple products.

However Sony was not previously known to supply components to Apple. Electronista reported last month that Apple’s usual image sensor supplier OmniVision may be unable to supply an upgraded 8 megapixel camera for the upcoming iPhone 5.

Wall the Journal didn’t make the connection at the time, numerousother tech pundits took the revelation to mean that the iPhone 5 will ship with the high spec 8 megapixel Sony Exmore R camera sensor.

It’s not yet clear what incorporating the delayed sensor will mean the iPhone 5 release time frame but it seems likely the device will miss the Apple World Wide Developers Conference in June.
