Graphics specialist Nvidia announced a new quad core entry into the firm’s Tegra range of mobile chipsets dubbed Project Kal-El.
The firm unveiled the Superman-themed chip at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, demonstrating the a prototype tablet running games and browsing the web including playback of 1440p high definition video on the 256 x 1600 resolution display panel.
The quad core processor power of the ‘Tegra super chip’ is joined by a new 12 core GeForce GPU. The power on offer will mean that tablets are able to offer 300 DPI screens in 10.1-inch tablet form factors.
Nvidia said that partners were already receiving Kal-El production samples and that vendors using Nvidia’s new display chipsets aimed to put devices into production in August.
The firm demonstrated Kal-El running the Coremark 1.0 benchmark, scoring an astonishing 11,352, more than an Intel Core 2 Duo T7200 processor (10,136) and double the performance of the dual-core Tegra 2 (5,850).
Hinting at products further afield, Nvidia revealed a further set of superhero-themed project names including Wayne, Logan and Stark. The company is aiming to deliver 75 times the performance of the Tegra 2 by the time Stark arrives in 2014.
