This is not your ordinary thumb drive

LaCie unveil USB 3.0 and SSD-equipped FastKey

Storage specialist LaCie has announced a USB 3.0 equipped SSD drive with the same physical form as a typical USB thumb drive but with vastly higher performance.

Standard USB thumb drives are vastly lower specification affairs than the average SSD so it’s little wonder that the LaCie FastKey manages to comfortably destroy the performance of the humble thumb drive by providing an astonishing 260MB/s transfer rate. Fast enough, the company says, to transfer 1,000 mp3 songs or five DIVX files in less than a minute.

“With most flash drives, transferring a large number of photos and mp3 files can take a few minutes,”said LaCie personal storage boss Luc Pierart. “With the Fastkey, transferring small files is immediate. You can back up or share your music and photo libraries as you head out the door.”

The 30GB drive starts at a hefty $149.99 via the LaCie Online Store and it will also be available in large capacities of 60 and 120GB. LaCie have fitted the internals into a study aluminium case and provide software for AES 256-bit encryption. The company also offers 4GB of secure online storage via the Wuala online backup service.

No word on European availability and pricing as yet.
