Nvidia previews ‘unreleased GPU’ technology

Nvidia showcased an unreleased forthcoming graphics card at PDXLAN 16.5 over the weekend, revealing that the card will use ‘vapor chamber’ cooling.

The technology is widely expected to be that of the unannounced GeForce GTX 580 and Nvidia said the new sealed water cooling system would enable the card to deliver better performance at a noise level seven decibels quieter than the former GTX 480.

"No matter how much I would like, this is not announcing a new product," Nvidia technical marketing boss Tom Petersen told PDXLAN attendees. "I am gonna announce some unreleased new Nvidia technology," he added.

Petersen then said that the unnamed GPU was the fastest DX11 GPU ‘on the planet’ and went on to introduce the vapor chamber cooling system and show off an Nvidia-made demo called ‘Aliens vs Triangles’ which demonstrated the upcoming technology’s prowess at triangle tesselation.

Petersen used the demo to blast a hole in the alien which was performed ‘dynamically’ which he said had powerful ramifications for games. Level sfrom the soon-to-be-released Call of Duty: Black Ops was used as the final part of Nvidia’s demonstration.
