BBC releases BlackBerry iPlayer app

The BBC has published a BlackBerry version of the iPlayer service application, allowing the smartphone to watch BBC television programmes and listen to radio broadcasts.

Available in the BlackBerry App World store, the new Blackberry iPlayer is compatible with devices based on BlackBerry OS 5.0 or later, including the Blackbery Bold 9700, Torch 9800 and Storm handsets. The application is recommended for use on Wi-Fi but will also work over a 3G service for Vodafone and Three customers.

The BBC had previously served Blackberry owners with a specially tailored web site and this is still the mechanism by which Apple iOS devices gain access to iPlayer content. The BBC has not launched an application for Android but the iPlayer web site is known to work with Android 2.2 ‘Froyo’ handset owners who have installed the Adobe Flash plug-in.

As with all BBC iPlayer services, the application provides access to the last 7 days of broadcast material and is only available to those within the UK.
