AMD Radeon HD 6870 roundup: ‘great cards’

PC hardware tech site Legit Reviews reviewed three new AMD Radeon HD 6870 video cards in a roundup which declared all three “great choices.”

Legit Reviews wrote that the new $240 AMD Radeon HD 6870 was aimed at the “sweet spot for gamers,” adding that the new AMD graphics card being fabricated on new 40 nanometer technology meant that the card was slightly faster than the Redeon HD 5850 despite having fewer stream processors and SIMD engines.

The site reviewed three launch products from AMD partners Diamond, Sapphire and XFX although all three were based on the AMD reference design. The Sapphire and XFX cards were “virtually identical” the site said, while the Diamond Radeon HD 6870 XOC was factory overclocked and so was slightly faster ‘out of the box’.

Legit Reviews did, however, point out that the new AMD card had excellent overclocking potential and all three were able to run at clock speeds above 1GHz. Despite the Diamond win in default configuration, the site declared all three had the same potential when overclocked.

XFX was called out for special praise regarding a the firm’s unique lifetime warranty while the Sapphire included a bundle of extras including a HDMI 1.4a cable, power supply adaptors and video adaptors while also being the cheapest card in the round up.

“The Diamond, Sapphire and XFX Radeon HD 6870 video cards are all great choices that are based off the AMD reference design,” concluded the Legit Reviews roundup. The cards were priced between $240 and $260 US MSRP.
