Following a surge in applications for apprenticeships at telco giant BT, the company announced that it would double the intake for 2010 to help with the new high speed fibre-based broadband roll out.
BT said that the firm had an astonishing 24,000 applications for the telco’s apprenticeship program, up from 9,000 in 2009. Accordingly it has added an extra 200 places to the planned 221 places which it said would help with the new super fast broadband network currently being built.
The apprenticeships specialise in a number of areas from technical IT-related roles to customer service roles. Successful applicants can expect salaries between £12,000 and £15,000 while they continue to study specialist systems and attain a BTEC qualification or foundation degree.
The 200 extra apprentices will be hired before Christmas, the company said.
On Tuesday BT announced a new Android smartphone application providing mobile access to the BT phone book. Versions for the Blackberry and iPhone are in development.
