Intel has opened its first semiconductor factory within China, based in the north-eastern city of Dalian.
According to Reuters, the plant was first announced back in 2007 and has taken three years and $2.5 billion to build.
Around 25 Chinese companies are said to have also invested in Dalian in order to position themselves to do business with Intel, which has already started doing business with over 80 local suppliers.
“This manufacturing facility helps deliver on our vision to contribute to sustainable growth in China while giving us better proximity to serve our customers in Asia,” said Intel’s chief executive Paul Otellini at the opening ceremony.
Although the plant is the first manufactory presence in China for the US giant, it also has an assembly and test centre in Chengdu and research and development labs in Beijing and Shanghai.
