Greater Manchester Police tweeted every incident the force responded to within a 24 hour period on Thursday in order to draw attention to the case load ahead of planned cuts.
Beginning at 5AM on Thursday, Manchester Police tweeted every incident large and small in an effort which it said would “allow the public to see what offers at one of the largest UK forces face on a daily basis.”
The move comes ahead of “unprecedented budget cuts” which have resulted in police and security officials issuing pre-emptive defences such as Metropolitan Police chief Sir Paul Stephenson defending the use of police specialists in an article in the Sunday Telegraph last month.
“Policing is often seen in very simple terms, with cops chasing robbers and locking them up. However the reality is that this accounts for only part of the work they have to deal with,” said Greater Manchester Police Chief Constable Peter Fahy.
“A lot of what we do is dealing with social and health problems such as missing children, people with mental health problems and domestic abuse. Often these incidents can be incredibly complex and need a lot of time, resource and expertise.”
